A man was detained on December 20 after he drove his car into a crowd at a Christmas market. The judge ordered him to be held in custody until trial on charges of five counts of murder, as well as attempted murder and causing serious bodily harm, according to reports. Reuters could not determine whether the suspect has a lawyer.
The motive for the attack "remains unclear," sources claim. It is known that the accused has been living in Germany for about twenty years. Media reports indicated that he had posted numerous messages on social media with anti-Muslim rhetoric.
According to official data, five people were killed in the incident – a nine-year-old boy and four women aged 52, 45, 75, and 67. 200 people were injured, with 40 in serious condition (including a Ukrainian citizen).
