Ukraine and Poland have reached an agreement to exhume the victims of the Volhynia tragedy.

On November 25, the Foreign Ministers of Poland and Ukraine, Radosław Sikorski and Andriy Sybiha, issued a joint statement announcing the establishment of a Ukrainian-Polish working group dedicated to the exhumation of the victims of the Volhynia tragedy. This group will operate under the auspices of the cultural ministries of both countries, as reported by the Polish state agency PAP.

During a joint briefing, Sikorski stated that the Polish side is mobilizing its own institutions, such as the Institute of National Remembrance, "to be responsive to Ukrainian demands."

Later, Polish Foreign Ministry representative Pawel Wronski added that the "symbolic decision" pertains to lifting the moratorium on the search and exhumation of the remains of Polish victims of the Volhynia tragedy, which has been in effect since 2017.

"Ukraine will not block the exhumation of the victims of the Volhynia tragedy... I hope that this time there will be no obstacles. This is a prerequisite for the complete reconciliation of our nations, which is so necessary in this dramatic moment of our shared history," – wrote Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on social media platform X.

Exhumation work may begin in the spring of 2025.
