Ukraine is continuing to implement long-term (forward) auctions for electricity imports in collaboration with its energy partners in the European Union, announced the National Commission for State Regulation in the Spheres of Energy and Public Utilities (NERC).

"Currently, the primary goal is to ensure Ukraine's energy security through cooperation with European partners, the introduction of forward auctions, and the enhancement of integration with the EU energy markets," said NERC head Yuriy Vlasenko, as quoted on the NERC website.

He participated, along with commission member Ruslan Slobodyan and Deputy Minister of Energy of Ukraine Roman Andarak, in an online meeting regarding the implementation of long-term auctions for capacity allocation between Ukraine and EU countries, organized by the Energy Community Secretariat at the end of last week. Representatives from the regulatory bodies and transmission system operators of Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, as well as international organizations ENTSO-E and the Joint Auction Office (JAO), also joined the meeting.

"The meeting discussed the prospects of implementing forward auctions as an effective tool for long-term planning of electricity imports, particularly during the autumn-winter period," the regulator informed.

Participants also expressed their support for collaborative efforts to develop the necessary regulatory and technical solutions to accelerate the integration of energy markets.

"These steps are expected to strengthen the energy stability of Ukraine and its partners and help ensure a stable energy supply even amid challenges related to aggression against Ukraine," emphasized the NERC.

As reported, citing LLC "D.Trading," Ukraine reduced its overall electricity imports by 9% in November 2024 compared to October, down to 165 million kWh.

Furthermore, in October, electricity imports fell by 58% compared to September, marking the lowest level since March 2024.

Ukraine and the EU have agreed to increase the maximum capacity for electricity imports from EU countries from December 1, 2024, from 1.7 to 2.1 GW.

Ukraine also has an additional guaranteed capacity of 250 MW for flows from the EU in emergency assistance mode.

In turn, European transmission system operators will be able to review the capacity limit for commercial electricity exchanges between the EU, Ukraine, and Moldova on a monthly basis starting from March 2025.
