Armenia has initiated its integration process into the European Union.

On January 9, the Armenian government approved a draft law titled "On the Initiation of the Process for the Republic of Armenia's Accession to the European Union." This information was reported by Armenia News.
Армения начала процесс интеграции в Европейский Союз.

The document was presented at the government meeting by Armenia's Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan.

He noted that the draft law on Armenia's euro-integration was prepared "as part of a civic initiative" and suggested that the government respond positively to it, which it did.

Mirzoyan outlined several factors that he believes positively influence the potential process of Armenia joining the EU, particularly the "quite intensive and dynamic relations" between Brussels and Yerevan "in recent years," covering "various sectors."

The diplomat also emphasized that the EU has supported democracy in Armenia "for various reasons," and Yerevan "has seen signs" that it could be "closer" to Brussels "as much as the EU deems possible."

At the government meeting, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that the adoption of the draft law does not imply automatic EU membership, as reported by "Radio Azatutyun".

"According to the constitution, the decision to join the EU or any other supranational organization can only be made through a referendum. This means that Armenia can only become an EU member if a referendum is held, in which the required number of participants votes in favor," he explained.

The Armenian Prime Minister believes that Yerevan should discuss a roadmap for euro-integration with Brussels and only then take any actions.

"I say this to properly shape expectations in society," Pashinyan stated.

"Radio Azatutyun" notes that the initiative for Armenia's euro-integration was launched by the "EuroReferendum" group, which gathered 60,000 signatures instead of the required 50,000.
