A deputy of the Kereckov village council in Transcarpathia, who detonated several grenades during a session in December of last year, has been sentenced to life imprisonment.
According to reports from the Security Service of Ukraine, on December 15, 2023, the deputy exploded three RGD-5 and F-1 fragmentation grenades in the council's session hall.
As a result of the blasts, 26 individuals were injured, and two of them later succumbed to their severe wounds. One man died the day after the attack, while the other passed away a month later.
"According to the investigation, the perpetrator had prepared in advance for the crime. He initially leveraged his connections within criminal circles to acquire the grenades and then concealed them in his own home," the statement reads.
It is noted that on the day of the council meeting, the deputy brought the grenades into the government building and briefly left the session hall to prepare them for use.
"Upon returning, the perpetrator took the grenades out of his jacket pockets and sequentially threw them onto the floor of the room, where nearly the entire composition of the village council was present," the SBU reports.
According to the data from the Office of the Prosecutor General, the deputy has been found guilty of committing a terrorist act that resulted in loss of life, as well as illegal handling of explosive devices (Part 3 of Article 258, Part 1 of Article 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). He has been sentenced to life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
The OGP reported that the man has been placed in custody at the "Transcarpathian Penal Institution (No. 9)" and will remain there until the verdict takes effect. A civil lawsuit has been filed against the deputy for compensation of the property damage caused by the terrorist act to the Kereckov village council.
Details of the Grenade Explosion in the Village Council of Transcarpathia
On December 15, 2023, explosions occurred in the building of the Kereckov village council in the Transcarpathian region – local deputy from the "Servant of the People" party, Sergey Batryn, threw three grenades during the session. More than 20 people were injured from the blasts, and later two died.
According to the investigation, on that day the deputies were electing a secretary for the village council and discussing financial matters – the budget for the upcoming year and the salary conditions for the chairman of the council. It was with the intention of influencing these decisions that the man resorted to committing the terrorist act.
