According to Kallas, Europe may reverse the easing of sanctions if Damascus takes "incorrect steps."
Previously, Reuters reported that the EU is likely to ease sanctions against Syria gradually, in order to support the country during the transitional period while maintaining leverage.
The sanctions included a ban on oil imports from Syria, restrictions on investments in the Syrian oil industry, and a freeze on any assets of the Syrian central bank within the EU. The roadmap, as noted by the agency, may stipulate that certain existing restrictions, particularly those related to arms and organizations connected to the regime of the ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, will remain in effect.
Syria may receive increased humanitarian aid, gradual support for reconstruction, and permission for Syrian refugees to travel freely back and forth to Europe during the transitional period.
