Members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched two surface-to-air missiles at a departing Boeing, resulting in the deaths of all 176 individuals on board, as noted by the diplomatic agency.
"Iran has grossly violated numerous norms of international law: it used weapons against a civilian aircraft in flight, failed to take all necessary measures to prevent the downing, and did not ensure a transparent and objective investigation into the circumstances of the disaster, nor proper judicial prosecution of those accused," the statement reads.
Five years after the tragedy, Tehran committed further offenses by siding with Russia in its war against Ukraine and supplying it with weapons, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated.
"Today, Iran continues to affirm its status as a killer by providing military and political support to the Russian Federation in its armed aggression against Ukraine, and the deepening cooperation between the regimes in Moscow and Tehran poses a direct threat to Europe and the Middle East," the foreign ministry wrote, urging the international community to unite on issues of peace and safety in civil aviation.
