The Italian Ambassador to Ukraine, Carlo Formosa, has signed an agreement on behalf of Italy with UNEP (the United Nations Environment Programme) to launch a project costing 2 million euros, aimed at enhancing the energy resilience of Ukrainian cities.

According to the Italian embassy, this initiative is funded by Italy and is designed to support Ukraine's recovery towards a more sustainable and decentralized energy system in line with the principle of Build Back Better, promoting increased efficiency and safety.

"The project involves a detailed analysis of opportunities for integrating renewable energy sources into Ukraine's energy system, focusing on assessing solar photovoltaic potential and the possibility of developing microgrids to strengthen the energy autonomy of cities. Advanced technological tools will be explored to enhance energy efficiency and reduce consumption with the aim of creating a model for more sustainable energy planning in cities," Ambassador Formosa explained.

He noted that one of the key aspects of the project is training and technology transfer involving both Italian and Ukrainian experts to develop local competencies in sustainable energy management.

"In addition, the program will support the Ukrainian government in developing long-term policies for energy transition and attracting investments in the renewable energy sector," the ambassador added.

The ceremony was attended by: Deputy Minister of Energy of Ukraine Roman Andriak, representatives of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) in Kyiv, and UNEP representatives.

The project, developed in collaboration with UNEP, is part of Italy's broader efforts to support recovery and energy security in Ukraine, for which 125 million euros have been allocated through joint initiatives and strategic cooperation with local and international institutions and partners.
