Italian Prime Minister Meloni met with Trump just days before Biden's visit to Rome, according to the New York Times.

On January 4, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni met with newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump, as reported by The New York Times.
Итальянский премьер Мелони встретилась с Трампом перед визитом Байдена в Рим, сообщает NYT.

It is noted that this meeting was informal and took place at Trump’s golf club in Florida just a few days before the current U.S. President Joe Biden's visit to Italy and the Vatican, scheduled for January 9–12.

According to the publication, Trump referred to Meloni as a "fantastic woman" who "has truly taken Europe and everyone else by storm."

The agenda of this meeting was not disclosed; however, as reported by the NYT, in the past, Meloni and Trump have expressed mutual admiration. This visit may indicate an alliance between the Italian Prime Minister and Trump, as well as the possibility of recognizing Rome as a mediator between the American politician and European leaders, particularly to resolve tensions between them, especially since Trump has threatened to initiate a trade war with the continent and could reduce U.S. support for certain NATO member countries and Ukraine, the media highlights.

Observers believe that another potential topic of discussion between Trump and Meloni could have been the detention of Italian journalist Cecilia Salo after Italy arrested an Iranian suspect of supplying drones to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

The newspaper adds that Trump’s private residence Mar-a-Lago has already been visited by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Argentine President Javier Milei, whom the publication labeled as a "proponent of illiberal democracy," as well as Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
