Law enforcement officials detained a couple of Russian agents who created an explosive device to carry out a terrorist attack near the military recruitment center in Dnipro on December 14 of last year. This was reported by the press center of the Security Service of Ukraine.
The security service reminded that as a result of the explosion near the administrative building of the local military recruitment center, a person was killed and several others were injured by an explosive device planted by a man recruited by Russian intelligence. After the attack, law enforcement apprehended the perpetrator, and now they have detained two agents from the aggressor country, who acted independently and manufactured the homemade explosive device.
The suspects turned out to be a 33-year-old deserter who had deserted his military unit in Ukraine and was hiding in Dnipro, along with his 25-year-old wife. According to the SBU, the couple came to the enemy's attention while searching for "easy" earnings on themed Telegram channels. They were subsequently recruited to carry out the operation.
"Following the instructions of the occupiers, they manufactured the explosive, then concealed it in a bag and placed it in a pre-determined hideout. After that, the traitors monitored remotely as the executor retrieved it, reporting this to their Russian handler via messenger. To avoid raising suspicions during their outings, the suspects brought along their 3-year-old child," the Ukrainian security service reported.
After the attack, the couple moved to another rented apartment and attempted to cover their tracks and go underground in order to continue their collaboration with the aggressor country.
Both agents were apprehended at their new place of residence. During the search, mobile phones and clothing containing evidence of their crimes were seized, along with Russian instructions for making explosives.
The detainees were informed of their suspicion under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine: Part 2, 3 of Article 258 (terrorist act committed by a group of persons in conspiracy, resulting in the death of a person); Part 1 of Article 14 (preparation for a crime).
Previously, law enforcement had issued a suspicion of terrorism to the perpetrator of the crime. All three criminals are in custody. They face life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
