The head of the regional council stated that Russians targeted Poltava out of revenge for the city's desire to eliminate all things Russian.

The strike by a Russian missile on a residential high-rise in Poltava on February 1 was an act of revenge for the Ukrainians' desire to rid themselves of everything Russian. This opinion was expressed by Oleksandr Belenkyi, the head of the Poltava Regional Council, on Facebook.
Председатель облсовета заявил, что россияне атаковали Полтаву в отместку за желание избавиться от всего, что связано с Россией.

"Yesterday, the Ministry of Culture made a decision to exclude 15 cultural heritage sites in Poltava from the state registry. Today, Russia launched a missile strike on a residential building in the regional center... This is the revenge of the terrorist group 'chud' and 'merya' against our state, which seeks to rid itself of everything Russian," he wrote.

Beleńkiy emphasized that "everything matters – culture, language, and faith."

According to data from the Air Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the occupiers struck a residential high-rise building in Poltava with an X-22 cruise missile. As a result of the impact, an entire entrance of the building was destroyed. According to the latest information from local authorities, eight people have died, including a child, and 17 others (including four children) have been injured. A three-day mourning period has been declared in Poltava region.
