Szijjártó hinted that Hungary might oppose Ukraine's EU membership due to the halt of Russian gas and oil transit.

Hungary may oppose Ukraine's accession to the European Union due to its refusal to allow the transportation of Russian energy resources. On January 8, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó hinted at this on Facebook in response to a bill initiated by members of the "European Solidarity" party, numbered 12380, which seeks to ban the transit of oil and gas through Ukraine during martial law.
Сийярто заявил, что Венгрия может не одобрить вступление Украины в ЕС из-за приостановки транзита российского газа и нефти.

"Reality: in the EU, member states collectively and unanimously decide on the admission of new members. In other words, each member state must vote 'in favor,'” wrote Szijjártó.

He emphasized the sovereign right of each country to determine "where and how to purchase the energy resources necessary for its functioning," adding that "no one has the right to impose more expensive energy resources on another country."

The Hungarian minister also pointed out that a country entering into an Association Agreement with the EU is obliged to "contribute to the energy security of the EU by ensuring transportation routes."

"Therefore, the closure of gas or oil routes is unacceptable and contradicts the expectations related to Eurointegration," he concluded.
