The draft document was submitted on June 17, 2024, by a group of people's deputies.
One of the initiators of the resolution, MP from "Servant of the People" Maria Mezentseva reported on Facebook that today 232 deputies voted in favor. She referred to the adopted document as "historic."
Mezentseva listed its key provisions:
- to officially recognize the mass extermination of Circassians and their forced displacement from their historical homeland between 1763 and 1864 as genocide;
- to express solidarity with the Circassian people, honoring the memory of the victims of the crime;
- to condemn the actions of the Russian Empire that led to significant losses among the Circassian community;
- to appeal to other countries and organizations to recognize these crimes as genocide;
- to provide the right to repatriation and self-determination;
- to condemn attempts by Russian propaganda to distort historical facts.
The Ukrainian parliament's bodies should also establish educational and research programs.
"The destruction of empires is the path to the freedom of peoples," Mezentseva stated.
