"No one is discussing elections anywhere except in Russia, and some are talking about it in Ukraine. In Ukraine, people seem to be concerned: 'What elections during wartime?' – while in Russia, there is a strong desire for this to maintain the narrative of the 'illegitimacy' of the Ukrainian president," said Zelensky.
The president reminded that conducting elections during a state of war requires changes to the legislation in Ukraine, as current laws do not allow for this.
"Moreover, when does the term of the sitting president expire? Until a new president is elected, the current president continues to fulfill their duties. This is all outlined, just like in the case of the parliament. Both the president and the parliament are legitimate authorities until a new president or a new parliament is formed," he stated.
Zelensky explained that once the war is over, a strong army and a robust arsenal will remain, along with security guarantees, and there will be no state of war in Ukraine – then it will be up to the parliament to support a specific date for the elections.
